The new season of the NFL kicks off on Thursday September 8 with New Orleans at Green Bay. It’s been a long off season with the NFL lockout making headlines all summer long.

Players finally ratified the new ten-year collective bargaining agreement which lets the new season go ahead as planned. The lockout was the first since 1987 and lasted four-and-a-half months–pretty much the whole summer, and left NFL football fans wondering if the new season would actually go ahead. The Hall of Fame game between St Louis and Chicago is the only game to have been cancelled by the NFL lockout.

Anyway folks, let’s forget the past and look to the future–a bright new NFL football season to enjoy. I’m counting down the days until September 8, and can’t wait to see the Saints destroy the Packers.

The Packers defeated the Steelers to win Super Bowl XLV in Dallas. The final score was 31-25. The Steelers made a strong fight back but couldn’t close down Green Bay in the end. Aaron Rodgers claimed MVP and a Super Bowl ring in only his third full season as a starting quarterback with the Packers. I’ll bet that Bret Favre is kicking himself!

Great win for the Packers in what was a tight game in spots.

It was the Drew Brees show on Sunday as he became the New Orleans Saints’ all-time completions leader, throwing for four touchdowns as New Orleans beat the Seahawks 34-19 .

Brees was 29 of 42 for 382 yards and completed his 1,850th pass in the second quarter to break a record held by Archie Manning since 1982.

Drew also hit Marques Colston and Robert Meachem twice each for TDs to keep the defending Super Bowl champions (7-3) one game behind NFC South Division leader Atlanta.

Check out the full Saints Vs. Seahawks game report on ESPN. It was quite an exciting game. I’m not usually one to bet on NFL, but I wonder what the odds were on Brews beating Manning’s record?

Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles rewrote a host of individual and team records as they crushed the Washington Redkins 59-28 this past Monday. Michael Vick ran the show all game – he became the first player in NFL history with at least 300 yards passing, 50 yards rushing, four passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in a game. He hasn’t thrown an interception or lost a fumble this season.

This is quite the turnaround in the fortunes of Michael Vick. In April 2007, Vick was implicated in an interstate dog fighting ring that had operated for years. In August 2007, Vick pleaded guilty to federal felony charges and served 21 months in prison, followed by two months under house arrest. With the loss of his NFL salary and product endorsement deals, combined with previous financial mismanagement, Vick filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2008. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank did not want Vick back on the team, and after attempts to trade him failed, Vick was released. He then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and was reinstated in Week 3 of the 2009 NFL season. Now, he is once again one of the most talked about American Football players–for the right reasons this time. This proves the Eagles made the right decision putting their faith in Vick. His life will make a great movie one day!

New England Patriots’ Tom Brady is now the highest-paid player in the NFL after signing a record new deal. His new contract makes him the highest-paid player in the NFL. His new contract extension is worth around $78 million over four years. The deal will give Brady an average of $18 million per season when it comes in next year. Brady will make $6.5 million this season in the final year of his current contract, so the extra $11.5 million will come in handy!

Is Brady worth this kind of money? Hard to say. Brady missed almost all of the 2008 season with a knee injury, but bounced back last year to throw for the second-highest yardage total of his career with 4,398 and also the second-most touchdown passes with 28. Let’s hope he stays injury-free, otherwise the crazy money will be put in perspective.
